Since 29 February 2020, public transport has been free for everyone, both residents and tourists. Free of charge applies to trains, trams and buses (RGTR, TICE and AVL). This means that travellers will no longer need a ticket, whether it is a single ticket or a season ticket. The only exception to free travel is for first-class tickets and season tickets on trains. It will continue to be charged at the current fares. However, all passengers must at all times be able to show personal identification at the driver’s request.

Plus for the first-class tickets and season tickets on trains you will be still charged. So it is not completely trade-free.

Showing personal identification “at all time” means you have to trade your freedom. At least a bit, here and there.
